In 2009, recognizing the growing need for advanced training in public health, a visionary initiative was undertaken in Karachi. Under the leadership of prominent figures, including Dr. K.S. Shah, the idea of establishing an institute dedicated to post-graduate training for doctors in the public health sector took shape. The foundation stone was laid by Col. S.M.K. Malik, then the Director of Health Services Punjab.
By 2012, the institute's building was completed, featuring eight departments. Initially, the teaching staff was appointed on a part-time basis. In the subsequent years, as the institute gained momentum, a transition to full-time staff was made. The institute has been a pivotal contributor to the field, fostering excellence in community health personnel for health administration, teaching, and fieldwork.
In 2019, marking its 10th anniversary, the institute underwent significant transformations and was officially renamed the Institute of Public Health. Over the past 13 years, the institute has played a crucial role in producing skilled administrators and planners, making notable contributions to the health sector in Karachi and beyond. Today, the Institute of Public Health stands as a beacon of education and innovation, continuing its legacy as a key player in advancing public health initiatives in the region.
